Thanksgiving

 

This is one of the most well founded of all Bible doctrines!  134 passages that contain the words thank, thanks, thanksgiving, thankful, etc., most of which refer to our being thankful to God.  We want to study the Bible teaching of thanksgiving by answering some questions about thanksgiving with the Word of God.

 

1.  Who do not give thanks?

 

Romans 1:21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

 

Luke 18:11  The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

 

2.  Who should give thanks?

 

Psalms 79:13  So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.

 

Psalms 140:13  Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

 

Mark 8:6  And he (Jesus) commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

 

3.  To whom should we give thanks?

 

Psalms 136:1  O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2  O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. 3  O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

 

Psalms 136:26  O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.

 

4.  For what should we give thanks?

 

Psalms 18:48-49  He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.  49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.

 

Psalms 30:4  Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

 

Psalms 107:1  O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

 

Jonah 2:9  But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

 

Luke 2:38  And she (Anna) coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

 

John 11:41  Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

 

Romans 1:8  First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

 

Romans 6:17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

 

Romans 7: 24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?  25  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

 

1 Corinthians 1:4  I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

 

1 Corinthians 15:57  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

 

2 Corinthians 2:14  Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

1 Thessalonians 2:13  For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

 

2 Thessalonians 1:3  We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

 

2 Thessalonians 2:13  But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

 

1 Timothy 1:12  And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

 

5.  How are we to give thanks?

 

Psalms 26:7  That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

 

Psalms 50:14  Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

 

Psalms 147:7  Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:

 

Philippians 4:6  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

 

Hebrews 13:15  By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

 

6.  Where are we to give thanks?

 

Psalms 35:18  I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people.

 

Psalms 95:2  Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

 

Psalms 100:4  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

 

Acts 27:35  And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

 

Ephesians 5:20  Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

 

Revelation 7:12  Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

 

Revelation 11:17  Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

 

7.  When are we to give thanks?

 

Psalms 119:62  At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

 

Ephesians 5:20  Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

 

Philippians 1:3  I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

 

8.  Why are we to give thanks?

 

Psalms 92:1  It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:

 

2 Corinthians 4:15  For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

 

 

 

 

Colossians 3:15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

 

Colossians 3:17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

 

Colossians 4:2  Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

 

1 Thessalonians 5:18  In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

 

9.  How long should we give thanks?

 

Psalms 30:12  To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
